My husband and I adopted Lois, a 6-year-old lab mix from Animal Friends in June 2007. We knew that she had been rescued from an inhumane situation and had also been adopted out, but was returned for being too destructive. We also learned she had been attacked in the shelter by another dog, and was dog aggressive / fearful as a result. Undeterred and full of love for her, we brought her home.

During the first few weeks we discovered not only did she have separation anxiety, but also had an incredible aversion to thunderstorms – she would run through the house, tearing up our mattress and couch, panting the entire time. In fact, there was a thunderstorm the very first night we had her! In addition, she had issues with resource guarding, accidents, and was even too afraid to go outside for walks. We were desperate – since we both work, we didn’t know where to turn for help.

Thank goodness for Denise Lohr of PetSitPgh. She and her daughter Dena have been invaluable to us as we teach Lois to relax and to trust again. We hired Dena as our dog sitter, and over the next few months she worked tirelessly with Lois, teaching her to sit, lie down, stay, and come when she called. She sat with Lois every day from 12-2, teaching her commands, and in the process, teaching Lois to trust people again. No longer does Lois fear going outside. Eventually, it became easier to walk her too. Lois began to relax and play instead of pacing nervously about the house. She is even calmer during thunderstorms. Dena was a huge part of that transformation.

Lois is now a different dog because of Dena’s love and care. Lois now loves walks, and playing ball and being outside are two of her favorite things in the world. She knows commands, and she’s completely housebroken. Her resource guarding issues are gone entirely. People constantly comment that Lois "is a different dog".

Dena has such a quiet, calm way with Lois. Where Bruce or I would panic at the sound of an approaching thunderstorm, Dena always maintained calm and as a result Lois did too. Dena is very patient, and always consistent when doing her training. She is an excellent dog sitter, and well on her way to becoming a professional dog trainer! I am grateful every day that we found Dena and Denise – and I know Lois is too.

"When our whole family went to Florida for a family reunion in September, I called Denise at Pet One to stay with our elderly S heltie Collie mix, Isaac.   We boarded our one-year-old Australian Shepherd, Rita, partly because she is so incredibly energetic that she could not be in the house for long periods, and partly because, having been brought up as a show dog, she ha d little exposure to other people, and is fearful and sometimes aggressive to strangers at home.  Denise did a great job with Isaac, and sometimes had to be pretty inventive to coax the old fellow out of the house. Incidentally , she also expertly looked after our other creatures , including rats, fish and an African spurred tortoise.  Several weeks later, when I had to travel abroad for business, I asked Denise to help out with the dogs during the day when my children are at school and my husband is at work. Knowing that she had a background in human services and also thinking I was pushing my luck, I asked her if she might be able to help out by keeping an eye on my two son s, aged 9 and 12, after school, until my husband arrived home. She obliged on both counts, and because of her expert care of both animals and children, my travel was far less a strain on our family that it would certainly have been without Pet One.  Denise worked pretty intensively with Rita (the Aussie), so that she was able to handle her and at the same time continue to socialize her . I am so pleased to have discovered Denise Lohr, and Pet One Pittsburgh. I highly recommend her to all pet owners, especially those like us , who are struggling to balance animals, busy families and careers."

Thank you so much for taking such great care of our (sometimes high maintenance) cat. The fact that you took the time to leave a note during every visit (twice a day) was above and beyond what we expected. We really felt like Bessie was well taken care of while we were gone, and having such a needy cat, it’s nice to know that we can go away for a couple weeks and know that Bessie is fine. You did everything we asked and more — and even during the holidays when you’re so busy — and we appreciated the call and email to let us know how it was going. If we know of anyone who needs a pet-sitter, we won’t hesitate to recommend you to them, and we’ll certainly ask you to take care of our cat the next time we’re away.

We love Denise. She takes great care of our unruly and needy dog!! Her weekly visits give me the peace of mind that I can take a class or go to the gym after work without being overwhelmed by guilt! Now I can have a dog without losing my life and my mind. Denise has made having a dog so easy that Stella might even get a little brother or sister one day soon.Sometimes I do get a little jealous though; I think Stella might like Denise more than she likes me.

A Paws Perspective:
Denise comes to my house to give me attention and exercise while my people are at work.  Yesterday, she picked me up and took me to the trails to sniff and check out the birds in Highland Park and got me so tired that I slept on my couch all afternoon!    I love having Denise visit me every day and I tell my people by being a good boy at night.

We knew from the first time we met Denise that Oggie would respond well to her attention and care because Oggie immediately sat at her feet and made himself comfortable with her.  Being that Oggie is a Labrador Retriever and still responds like a big puppy, It gives us peace of mind to know that he is given a break during the day and has a chance to burn some energy through activities such as exploring the trails of Highland Park.  Thank you Denise!

Dear Denise,
Ben and I both want to thank you for taking such wonderful care of our kittens.  I had been so nervous about leaving, but as soon as you left from the consultation visit, Ben immediately turned to me and said "See?  Nothing to worry about!", and I knew he was right!  I was so comforted that you had such an organized system for keeping track of all of our cats’ likes and habits, and, more importantly, you wanted to know!
It was so easy for us to relax and enjoy our trip knowing that our kittens were being visited twice a day by someone who loves cats as much as we do.  After seeing your professionalism and way you connected with our kittens when you met them, I knew we could relax completely.
I cannot thank you enough for taking on what I would think is a sizeable job at the last minute.  I felt so badly about calling you so close to our departure date, but you really pulled through for us, and I wanted you to know how much it was appreciated!
