Checklist for pet sitting clients
- Always confirm your pet sitting dates the day prior to leaving by email and/or phone (especially during the busy holiday times!)
- Have at least two sets of keys made for your pet sitter. There is a good reason for this. Most professional pet sitters keep a locked key cabinet at home with “emergency” keys. The other set will be carried to and from the visits. Accidents do happen and if needed, the other set will be available. (I have personally had keys break off in the lock, disappear into the car console and flip into sewers.)
- Have a neighbor, relative or friend on call while you are away who can gain entry into your home. Make sure your pet sitter has this person’s contact information in the case of severe weather or medical emergency.
- Pet supplies, including cleaning supplies, should be readily available or a note should be left with directions on where to find them. Please leave extra food, treats and litter.
- Scoop your cat’s litter prior to leaving.
- Let your pet sitter know if a relative or friend has been invited to your home for any reason during your absence. The same goes for professional cleaning people or contractors.
- If your plans change and you are coming home earlier or later than originally planned let your pet sitter know as soon as possible so arrangements can be made and helpers can be notified.
- Take into consideration that your pet sitter normally has a vehicle that will need to be parked during the visit and make sure you let the pet sitter know where a legal parking place is located.
- If you have a security system, please make the code known to the pet sitter and also any code words that need to be given to the security company if the system has been accidentally set off.
- If your dog or cat has a history of aggressive behavior in general or with another dog or person ( eg: the mail carrier) let the pet sitter know how you normally cope with this.
- Let anyone who normally looks out for you during your absences to know that a professional pet sitter is coming.
